THE FACELIFT
The Purpose
With age, the skin loses its elasticity and muscles begin to slacken. Wrinkles start to develop, particularly around the eyes and mouth. Sagging in areas such as the mouth, neck, jaw line, eyelids and eyebrows also commence. Factors such as smoking, genetics, lifestyle, exposure to the sun, and weight loss generally all contribute to this drastic aging of the face and body.
The facelift is a tried and tested way to rejuvenate your facial appearance and usually works best on the lower face and upper neck. You can choose to combine a facelift with other procedures - concentrating on the eyelids or brow for example - such as non-surgical treatments (like botox or fillers) to further reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The Procedure
There are so many different types of facelift. It’s a complex area of the human body, with new developments emerging all the time. In essence, the skin and deeper muscle layer - the SMAS layer - is elevated and re-draped to reverse the appearance of aging. In younger and less advanced cases, the Mini Face Lift may give a highly favourable result via a very short incision. We’ll be able to advise and guide you towards an individual solution.
A general anaesthetic is normally used and most people stay in hospital for one or two days afterwards.
The Followup
Your face is a sensitive area and this is quite an intricate operation, so recovery will take a while as you would expect. Swelling and a mild ache are natural and can easily be relieved with prescribed painkillers. You may also experience some numbness in the cheeks and around the ears but this tends to disappear within a few weeks.
You should be OK to get on with your work and social life after a couple of weeks, but you should avoid strenuous activity and sudden head movement for at least six weeks. We would also recommend that you don’t have any massage treatment or saunas during this period.
